This project with Sankalptaru ( https://sankalptaru.org/) entailed researching viability of Urban Forestry as a successful restoration initiative to increase green cover in Indian cities. I worked on various factors that could lead to the success of this planned initiative –
- Outlining the benefits of urban forestry with respect to carbon sequestration and fruit yield of native Indian plant species
- Study of hydroponic and aeroponic farming systems as alternatives to traditional agricultural methods
- Analysis of existing case studies in India with respect to the above-mentioned factors
Using all of the above research, I outlined the recommendations in terms of restoration ecology at an active project site in Manesar, India
This project provided me with an insight into environmental engineering since I was able to analyse both theoretical principles of urban forestry and evaluate their applications in the real world, alongside investigating hydroponics as a “greener” and more efficient way to farm in the future. The project allowed me to understand the value of case studies and provided me experience of actively evaluating the progress of an existing large-scale ecological program.
